The land known as Redfish Point in Lee County is on the Gulf of Mexico.  Cape Coral was developed as a new build community in 1957 in collaboration with the American Gulf Corporation.  This became a residential area for wealthy retired business people.  in 1992 a building boom was aimed at expanding the population with younger families.  The municipality has a 20% non-resident population.
