Pursgloves of Wingerworth - [WING]

Wingerworth is on the Roman road called Ryknield Street.  The original Anglo Saxon village was on the hill by the church (All Saints), but more modern development has displaced the village location to encompass Hockley and Nether Moor.

This settlement was a group of small villages with mixed farming, but around 1600 a small blast furnace was established at Nether Moor to process Wingerworth Ironstone. By 1780 a furnace had been established at Furnace Hill.  The industry eventually moved to fields outside of the parish boundary.

James Pursglove [1196] married Elizabeth Watts on 25/8/1778
